Aussies, Kiwis Invited to Ski Canada in 2010
Tourism BC and Travel Alberta have successfully concluded their first major ski promotion in New Zealand aimed at attracting Australians and New Zealanders to Canadian skiing vacations during 2010.
The partnership hopes to add to the 28,000 Australians who visited Canada last season for snow holidays.
Australia ranks as the third largest international market of direct customs entries to British Columbia with 160,000 visits in 2008. And nearly 34,000 New Zealanders visited British Columbia during the same period.
During Australia’s July school holiday, Tourism BC and Travel Alberta partnered with NZSki, a leading New Zealand ski resort and mountain owner, and ski travel wholesaler Dive Fish Snow to launch Ski Canada.
Two of New Zealand’s top ski mountains, Remarkables and Coronet Peak, located near the resort town of Queenstown, hosted the promotion. Both are popular destinations with New Zealand and Australian ski enthusiasts.
Coronet Peak was the hub of international race training in the Southern Hemisphere this year in the lead up to the 2010 Winter Games. The Canadian Men’s Alpine Team arrived during the promotion period, bringing with them a 32-strong person team of athletes, coaches, doctors, physios and ski techs. The team includes 2009 World Downhill Champion John Kucera and 2009 World Slalom bronze medallist Michael Janyk.
The highlight of the Ski Canada promotion was the opportunity to win a Canadian ski holiday to Whistler, Banff and Lake Louise.
Tourism BC and Travel Alberta blanketed the mountains with promotional materials. More than 200 mountain staff wore red and white armbands which read “Ski Canada – Ask Me How.” Front-line food and beverage staff sported Whistler, Banff and Lake Louise resort t-shirts. More than 2,300 entries were received prior to the contest closing date in September.
The Ski Canada contest was also promoted in an e-newsletter sent to NZSki’s database of 15,000 experienced Aussie and Kiwi skiers and boarders. The e-news also highlighted Canadian ski experiences and provided links to vacation booking opportunities.
Getting to BC and Alberta ski resorts is easy from Downunder. Air Canada has year round daily direct flights from Sydney to Vancouver. Air New Zealand began direct flights in November 2007, servicing the Auckland to Vancouver run four times weekly during the winter ski season.
