It's Easy to Catch the Games Spirit

Archive Story, Winter 2010:
You don’t have to break the bank account to catch the spirit of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The Province of British Columbia, The City of Vancouver, VANOC, and many others have been offering up a slate of free events and activities throughout Games time to whet your cultural and athletic appetite. What follows is just a partial list of all that’s being happening in Games destinations and around the province.

During the 2010 Winter Games, the Province of BC transformed Robson Square into a one-stop centre for business, media and the public. The Province’s main celebration site features live entertainment, sport demonstrations, light shows, video displays, and fun for the whole family.

British Columbia Canada Pavilion on the fourth floor of the Vancouver Art Gallery at Robson Square, features state-of-the-art exhibits and interactive displays showcasing the very best of BC innovation and culture to the world. At the same time, the Province is partnering with the Vancouver Art Gallery to provide all visitors with free admission to the gallery and BC Canada Pavilion during the Games.

Robson Square is also home to the 2010 Commerce Centre. The Commerce Centre was set up by the Province of BC to help inform, educate and connect businesses to the economic opportunities of the Games. BC communities, industry associations, economic development agencies, Vancouver 2010 Winter Games partners and others are hosting economic development and business events at the centre during the Games.

Check out the 2010 Olympic Games Free Attractions listing on WWW.YOUGOTTABEHERE.COM for information on Olympic pavilions representing nations from around the world offering up free admission and the opportunity to rub elbows with world class athletes. Groove to world-class DJs at Holland Heineken House near the Richmond Olympic Oval or head down to German Saxony House in the temporarily converted Vancouver Rowing Club in Stanley Park where the bratwurst and beer will be flowing.

LiveCity Vancouver has hosted a staggering array of musical and artistic talent at its two venues, LiveCity Yaletown and LiveCity Downtown. American roots rockers Wilco, along with top shelf acts like the Sam Roberts Band, Blue Rodeo and Alexisonfire are some of the performers plugging in for free shows during the Games.

Celebration Sites in Whistler and Richmond have attracted huge crowds with their strong line up of free, accessible, family fun entertainment. The sites have been home to memorable celebrations during the Games in these communities.

In towns and cities across the province, local Spirit Committees have been hosting Games-time events to give residents and visitors the opportunity to share in the excitement of the Olympics no matter there they are living.

Vancouver 2010’s Cultural Olympiad has also rolled out a roster of diverse events, some ticketed others free of charge, from the works of Vietnamese multi-media artist Nhan Duc Nguyen to the ongoing Culture for Kids program featuring among other acts matinee performances by the STREB Extreme Action Company and Rick: The Rick Hansen Story.

So even if visitors didn’t have seats for the big ticket competitions, there was plenty to keep them busy during the 2010 Winter Games.
